apibrėžtis Europos Bendrijos gyvūnų ir augalų rūšys, kurios: a) yra nykstančios, išskyrus rūšis, kurių arealas yra nedidelis ir siekia Europos Bendrijos teritorijos pakraštį ir kurioms negresia išnykimas ar kurios nėra pažeidžiamos Vakarų Palearktikos regione; b) yra pažeidžiamos, t. y. manoma, kad netolimoje ateityje jos gali būti priskirtos nykstančiųjų kategorijai, jei ir toliau veiks tai lemiantys veiksniai; c) yra retos, t. y. rūšys, kurių mažos populiacijos šiuo metu nėra nykstančios ar pažeidžiamos, bet yra pavojus, kad jos gali tokiomis tapti; rūšys gyvena mažose teritorijose arba yra retai išsidėsčiusios didesnėje teritorijoje; d) yra endeminės ir joms reikalingas išskirtinis dėmesys dėl specifinio jų natūralios buveinės pobūdžio ir (arba) dėl jų naudojimo galimo poveikio jų buveinei ir (arba) jų apsaugos būklei.
